Storage Spaces and Storage Pools

Storage Spaces is a new Windows Server 2012 service that enables the pooling of storage on a server to deliver essentially virtual disks to the server operating system. Unlike VHD or VHDX virtual disk, which is a file on single volume, and unlike a striped or fault-tolerant volume that requires several dynamic disks, Storage Spaces leverages storage pools and allows administrators to create and present a single virtual disk that can reside on a single or several windows disks. Storage pools can be easily extended to include new disks and can be created in fault tolerance or resilient configurations.
