Windows Server 2008 extends the Windows Server releases trend of including only the absolute essentials in the default release. Everything else is an optional component. In Windows Server 2008 that goes even further with the new Server Core versions, which don’t include any of the GUI components that make up much of what we think of as “Windows.” In both Server and Server Core, there are three types of optional components—Roles, Role Services, and Features.
