Windows Server Design Limitations

Windows Server is bound by certain inherent limitations such as maximum NTFS files per volume and maximum volumes per instance. Use this section to determine if a server configuration is nearing any of these limits.

Description Limit
Maximum number of volumes on a server Approximately 2,000 volumes. Up to 1,000 of these volumes can be dynamic volumes; the rest are basic volumes. Boot times increase as you increase the number of volumes. In addition, you must use mounted drives to access volumes when all drive letters on a server have been used.
