Task 2: Determine the Number of Namespaces

DFS namespaces can be created to allow organizations to design separate folders organized by region, business group, or administrative group. Review the business requirements that were collected in Step 1 to determine whether more than one namespace is required for organizational reasons.

There are also limits to DFS namespace scalability. When adding folders to namespaces, keep the following recommendations in mind:

  • For stand-alone namespaces, Microsoft recommends a maximum of 50,000 folders with targets. This recommendation is made in order to manage startup times for the DFS service. If scale beyond this limit is required, be sure to test the startup time to ensure that it is acceptable.
