Many components and processes must be understood to implement a secure and successful PKI. Part of the planning process should include the development of a certificate practice policy that defines how the PKI will be used. This can ensure that the PKI remains worthy of the trust placed in it. The first step in creating a secure PKI is understanding the basic information described in this chapter. The second step is the creation of a test PKI, which is covered in Chapter 13.
