Summary

Many things contribute to data security. Of prime importance, though, are file, folder, and registry permissions. These form the foundation upon which other defenses can rely. Should all else fail, these need to be strong. This chapter explained these permissions and how they can work with other items to protect data. It also introduced interesting developments such as WebDAV, which can change the way data is remotely accessed and thus the way it must be secured. Protection for data in flight will be covered in later chapters, and the use of the Encrypting File System to encrypt data files will be introduced in the next chapter.
