Summary

Internet Information Server (IIS) is Microsoft’s server-side solution to providing HTTP, FTP, SMTP, and other services to Intranet and Internet clients. IIS 4.0—a component of the downloadable Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack—adds major features to and significantly upgrades the existing capabilities of IIS 2.0, which ships with Windows NT Server 4.0.

IIS 4.0 is managed with Internet Service Manager (ISM), a plug-in for the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), a Windows NT 5.0 component released with the Option Pack. IIS 4.0 also provides ISM/HTML, an administrative tool that allows you to perform most ISM management functions using only a web browser.

In the next chapter we look at troubleshooting.
