Summary

Windows NT provides a wide variety of networking protocols, including TCP/IP. The basic network software is installed through the Network properties sheet, which contains five tabs:

Identification

Defines the Windows computer name.

Services

Installs network services.

Protocols

Installs network protocols.

Adapters

Defines and configures the network hardware installed on the computer.

Bindings

Creates the logical connections between services, protocols and adapters.

The TCP/IP protocol is installed through the Protocols tab. Once installed, TCP/IP is configured through the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties sheet. The tabs on that sheet are used to configure the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway address, Internet host name, domain name, and DNS server address. They provide a complete, basic TCP/IP client configuration.

An alternative to manually defining the TCP/IP configuration is to use the Dynamic Host Configuration protocol to provide all of this information and more. In Chapter 6 we learn how a DHCP server is set up.
