Windows is not the only operating system to suffer from a profusion of different management tools that do not interoperate well. Neither are servers and workstations the only devices for which central administration is desirable. Unsurprisingly, therefore, the concept of WMI is neither unique nor particularly new. This section puts WMI in context by considering briefly some of the motivational factors that led to its invention.
