Appendix A. WMI on Other Microsoft Platforms

Throughout this book, we have talked about WMI almost exclusively in the context of Windows 2000. However, WMI is also available on Windows 95 OSR2, Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows NT 4 (with Service Pack 4 or greater), so many of the techniques discussed in this book can be used across platforms if you are running a heterogeneous Microsoft network, albeit with some loss of functionality. The new Windows XP platform, soon due for release, also ships with WMI as a core component. Functionality here will be almost identical to Windows 2000 and even promises a number of enhancements and extensions.
