Chapter 27. Connecting a PlayStation 3

When it comes to being a great game console/convergence device, the Xbox 360 isn't the only game in town. Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) is another device in the fiercely competitive console market that has everything but the kitchen sink, it seems, in terms of media playback capabilities.

Sony's third-generation game console was designed from the ground up as a media powerhouse. Its custom Cell processor along with a custom NVIDIA graphics processor provides the horsepower. The 20 GB or larger hard drive, a Blu-ray optical drive, and built-in networking (including Wi-Fi in some models) means that Sony thought of every way they could to allow owners to get media content onto the machine.

The media streaming in the PS3 is accomplished using the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocols espoused by the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), which Sony, like Microsoft, is a member of. Fortunately, the UPnP protocols are also the basis for the media sharing features of Windows Home Server. This is fortunate because it means that the "universal" in the name is factual — the compatibility between products of two otherwise competitive companies means that the consumers are the ones who win.
