Chapter 16. Installing Server Applications

In building Windows Home Server, Microsoft packed just about every server application that they could think of that could be useful for the home user. Out of the box, Windows Home Server provides file server, Web server, media streaming services, backup services and also acts as a Remote Desktop gateway. Could you possibly need more functionality than that? Of course you could! That shiny new (or recycled) Windows Home Server machine is just begging for you to install additional server applications in order to get even more value and utility out of it. Your server is on 24/7, shouldn't you be able to use it 24/7 for all of your server application needs?

While the range of services that Windows Home Server offers is already impressive, there is no reason why you shouldn't install other server applications to get even more out of it. Here are a few ideas to consider:

  • Hosting your own mail server

  • Installing an antivirus management server

  • Hosting a multiplayer game server
