Chapter 8. Building Devices

The process of building devices based on Windows Embedded CE can be separated out into several stages:

  • Device planning.

    • Requirements definition.

    • Selection and/or planning of hardware development.

    • Selection of a base template for the operating system (OS) design.

    • Planning of image deployment for production.

  • Development of the hardware platform (optional).

  • Development and customization of a Board Support Package (BSP) for a selected hardware platform (optional).

    • Launching Windows Embedded CE on a selected hardware platform.

    • Driver development.

  • Operating system design.

    • Configuring a run-time image.

    • Developing applications.

    • Building and testing intermediate versions of the image.
