Why a Book About Tools?

A couple of years ago, I (James) started working at a consulting company in Cincinnati. The lead for my project was a great architect named Tom Bruns. Tom came from a manufacturing background, and he used to say that you could always tell good craftsmen because they always brought their own tools to the job. They cared enough about what they were doing that they wouldn’t just use whatever tools you had lying around; they had tools they liked and trusted, and those were the only tools for them.

This applies to software development as much as it applies to any other craft. Developers who are passionate about what they do want to use only the best tools available for the job.

The goal of this book is to help you be prepared for your job and to select the best tools available to enable you to create the best software solutions possible.
