Installing a Modem for Dial-Up Service

Before installing a dial-up modem, first install any driver software that came with the product. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install a Windows 8 or Windows 7 driver, using the 32-bit or 64-bit version, as appropriate, for your copy of Windows.

For an internal modem on a desktop computer, shut down Windows, turn off the power, pop open your PC’s case, and insert the modem card into a free expansion slot inside the computer. An external USB modem simply plugs into the USB port on your computer. For an external serial modem, cable it to a serial port on your PC and then connect the external power supply.
