Setting the Default Output Device

Windows 8 is happy to let you have more than one audio playback device installed on your system. For example, you might have your PC connected to desktop speakers, headphones, and a home theater receiver; however, you might want to set up one of these devices as the default. To do this, right-click the taskbar notification area’s Volume icon and then click Playback Devices to open the Sound dialog box with the Playback tab selected. Click the device you want to use, and then below click Set Default.
