A Tale of Two Windows: The Start Screen Versus the Desktop

The most obvious difference between Windows 8 and its predecessors is that once you’ve logged on, you’re shown the new Start screen (refer to Figure 1.1), which represents applications (apps) with various sized tiles rather than icons. Touching or clicking on a tile opens the app. Tiles don’t necessarily display just static images and text: live tiles can display dynamic information such as the date, time, weather forecast, and the arrival of new email messages.
