5.4. Compress Your Image Files

You can compress one or more of your large image files into a smaller format, either to save space or to upload to a Web site.

Image files are often quite large. Complex bitmap images and photo-quality images from a digital camera or scanner run to several megabytes or more. A large collection of such files can easily consume gigabytes of hard drive space. If you are running low on hard drive space, but you do not want to delete any of your image files, compressing those files into smaller versions can help.

Similarly, you may need to upload one or more of your image files to a Web site. You not only have to compress Web images so that users with slow connections can load them in a reasonable time, but you must ...
