Connecting to the Internet

To connect to the Internet, you need Internet access (usually via DSL or cable) and a broadband modem, or dial-up access through a phone line. If you want to share that Internet access with more than one computer, or you want your computers to share libraries or printers on a network, you will need a router. Technically, you could use a switchbox, but for a few dollars more you can get a wireless router.

TIP: Usually the broadband modem and the router are two separate devices, but some cable or phone companies also offer a combination modem/router or can suggest models you can buy that work with their system.
