Perform backups automatically

The Backup utility includes the ability to schedule unattended backups, enabling you to back up your system automatically at regular intervals. This is particularly useful for backing up the system in the evenings or on weekends when you’re not using the system.

Schedule automatic backups

The Backup utility provides a wizard to automate the process of defining a backup job and scheduling it for execution. Follow these steps to define and schedule a backup:

  1. Open the Backup utility.

  2. Click the Schedule Jobs tab.

  3. Click Add Job.

  4. Click Next to start the wizard.

  5. Use the wizard to define what to back up, the backup type and location, and other general backup options.

  6. The wizard displays a When to Back Up dialog box enabling you to run the backup job now or schedule it for later execution. Select Later, type a name for the job in the Job Name text box, and click Set Schedule.

  7. Use the resulting Schedule Job property sheet to specify how often to run the backup job, at what time to start it, the first execution date, and various options that determine how Backup runs the automated job. The options are generally self-explanatory.

  8. When you’re satisfied with the schedule click OK. Click Next and then Finish to schedule the job.
