Disconnect users from your FTP site automatically

Windows 2000 Professional is limited to ten concurrent connections. If several users connect to your FTP site but don’t disconnect when they finish downloading or uploading, other users could be locked out of the site until a connection times out and becomes available. You can reduce the timeout period so that inactive users are disconnected more quickly. You also can manually disconnect users if needed.

Configure FTP timeout

The default timeout for the FTP site is 900 seconds, or 15 minutes. If this is too long you can decrease the setting so that inactive users are automatically disconnected more quickly. Here’s how:

  1. Open the IIS console, right-click the FTP site, and choose Properties.

  2. On the FTP Site page, enter the desired connection timeout period in the Connection Timeout text box. Click OK.

Disconnect users

In addition to changing the timeout value, you also can disconnect users manually when necessary:

  1. Open the IIS console, right-click the FTP site, and choose Properties.

  2. On the FTP Site page, click Current Sessions.

  3. Select the user you want to disconnect and click Disconnect, or click Disconnect All to disconnect all sessions.
