Place users in specific FTP folders automatically on connection

Directing remote users to their own folders automatically at login serves two purposes: it eliminates the need for relatively inexperienced FTP users to navigate a directory structure, and saves time for advanced users who don’t want to have to navigate the directory structure to get to their folders.

Configuring automatic folder direction

Automatic logon in an FTP folder is really a byproduct of the way the FTP server works, not something you need to design into your site. When a user logs in with a given username, the FTP service checks to see if a physical or virtual folder exists by the same name. If so, the service automatically makes that folder the current folder for the user’s FTP session. If no matching directory is found, the user is placed in the root FTP folder.

Following are the general steps to make automatic direction to a folder work for FTP clients:

  1. Create a physical folder that matches the user’s logon name under the root FTP folder, or create it as a virtual directory.

  2. Have the client connect to the site. When prompted for a username and password, specify the username that matches the folder name.
