Add folders from other computers to your web site
IIS is flexible in the way it enables you to add content to a web site. While each site has a primary home directory, sites can also incorporate other directories as virtual directories . This capability enables you to use folders on other local drives or even on other computers across the network within the site structure.
Virtual directories act just like local directories under the home directory, with their alias names serving as the logical directory name. You can use them in relative references within your web site page structure (linking to documents in the folders, for example), and users can connect to them by adding the folder to the site’s URL.
For example, assume you assign the folder c:\ site\
folder
as a virtual directory with the alias
business
. Users could access the virtual folder
by the URL http://YourSite/business, where
YourSite
is the IP address or name of the
web site under which you created the virtual folder.
Create virtual directories for a site
Creating a virtual directory is easy with the help of a wizard in the IIS console:
Open the IIS console, right-click the web site under which you want to create the virtual directory, and choose New → Virtual Directory.
In the Virtual Directory Creation Wizard, specify the following information:
- Alias
This is the name by which remote users will see the folder. It need not have a name relationship to the physical folder name.
