Limit the number of users who can access a folder or file at one time
There are a handful of reasons to limit access to a shared folder. You might have a slow computer and need to keep an eye on performance. Or perhaps the number of users is simply overwhelming your computer’s bandwidth. Maybe you need to apply restrictions for licensing purposes. Whatever the reason, reducing the number of users who can connect to a shared resource is fairly easy.
Set access restrictions on shares
Windows 2000 Professional allows a maximum of ten concurrent connections. Windows 2000 Server allows an unlimited number of connections. With both platforms you can explicitly specify the number of users who can access a shared folder at one time. Here’s how:
Right-click the shared folder and click Sharing to open its Sharing page.
Select the Allow option and use the spin control to select the maximum number of concurrent users.
Click OK to close the Sharing page.
