To Launch

  • Start Settings Control Panel System

Description

System is a catch-all for a variety of different system-related configuration tasks, including:

  • Specifying your computer name and whether your computer belongs to a domain or a workgroup

  • Creating and managing hardware profiles, and installing and managing hardware devices

  • Configuring user profiles, performance options, environment variables, and startup and recovery options

System opens a property sheet that has five tabs. The key settings here are:

General

Displays important system and network information concerning the machine.

Network Identification

Displays and modifies the computer name, name of the domain or workgroup to which the computer belongs, primary DNS suffix, and pre-Windows 2000 NetBIOS computer name.

Hardware

Opens the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard (see Add/Remove Hardware in this chapter), Device Manager (see Device Manager), and creates and manages hardware profiles on your computer (see hardware profile). It also configures how Windows 2000 will react when you try to install new software that is not signed with a digital signature (install all files, warn about unsigned files, or block installation of unsigned files).
