Services — H,PP

Synopsis

Manages services on local and remote computers.

Description

Services starts, stops, pauses, resumes, and configures startup and recovery settings for services on both local and remote computers, including computers running Windows NT 4.0 Server. You can also view the various dependencies between services so you can see the effect of stopping or pausing services.

The corresponding Windows NT 4.0 tool is Services in the Control Panel.

Using Services

You can access Services by:

  • Start Programs Administrative Tools Computer Management Services and Applications Services

  • Installing the Services snap-in into a new or existing console

The console tree displays only the Services root node, while the various Windows 2000 services and their statuses are displayed in the Details Pane. For background information see service.

Action menu

Under the Action menu you can select the following:

Services

Select this to send a console message to all users currently connected to the connected server. You might do this, for example, if you were going to pause or stop the Server service, telling users to close their files in order to avoid losing work.

A service in the Details Pane

Select this to start, stop, pause, resume, or restart the service. Double-click on a service to open its property sheet in order to configure the startup type, account context, and recovery settings for the service. For more information on procedures see service.
