Synopsis
Configures and manages a remote-access server or router.
Description
Routing and Remote Access can be used to configure a Windows 2000 server for the role of:
A dial-up networking server (remote-access server)
A virtual private networking server (VPN server)
In addition, it can be used for:
Configuring a direct cable connection between two computers for the purposes of file transfer between them
Configuring a multihomed machine to function as a router using RIP or OSPF as a routing protocol
Routing and Remote Access performs remote-access server functions similar to the Windows NT administrative tool, Remote Access Admin, and more specifically to the Routing and RAS Admin tool installed with the optional Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) component for Windows NT 4.0 Server.
Using Routing and Remote Access
You can access Routing and Remote Access by:
Start → Programs → Administrative Tools → Routing and Remote Access
Installing the Routing and Remote Access snap-in into a new or existing console
By default, Routing and Remote Access Service is configured for manual startup on a Windows 2000 server, so the console tree initially looks like this:
