Synopsis

Creates and manages performance logs and alerts.

Description

Performance Logs and Alerts enables administrators to collect and log data for monitoring the performance of processor, memory, disk, network, and other subsystems of their computers. This information can then be used to analyze and optimize the performance of network servers.

For administrators familiar with Windows NT 4.0 Server, the Performance Logs and Alerts snap-in performs functions similar to those provided by the NT administrative tool, Performance Monitor. However, Performance Logs and Alerts can only be used to collect performance data and not to view it. To view and analyze performance data, use the administrative tool called Performance, which includes the ActiveX control called System Monitor. For more information see Performance in this chapter.

Using Performance Logs and Alerts

You can access Performance Logs and Alerts by:

  • Start Programs Administrative Tools Computer Management System Tools Performance Logs and Alerts

  • Start Programs Administrative Tools Performance Performance Logs and Alerts

  • Installing the Performance Logs and Alerts snap-in into a new or existing console
