Synopsis

Create an OU, move an OU, and move objects to a different OU.

Procedures

The following procedures assume that you have the Active Directory Users and Computers console open.

Create an OU

Use this method to create a hierarchical structure of OUs within a domain, if desired (see OU for more information):

Right-click on a domain or an OU within a domain New Organizational Unit specify name for new OU

You can also rename or delete OUs you create.

Move an OU

Right-click on an OU Move specify new parent OU or specify the domain as the parent

Specifying the domain as the parent makes the OU a top-level OU.

Move an Object to a Different OU

Right-click on an object in original OU Move specify target OU

Notes

  • You cannot delete the default containers created when Active Directory is installed—namely Builtin, Users, Groups, Computers, Domain Controllers, ForeignSecurityPrincipals, and the special containers visible only using View Advanced Features.

  • Additional tabs are available on the property sheet for a domain when View Advanced Features is selected.
