Synopsis

Add a disk, assign a drive letter or path, connect to disks remotely, create a logical drive or partition or volume, delete a partition or volume, extend a volume, format a disk, maintain disks, reactivate a disk, recover a failed or mirrored or RAID-5 volume, repair a partition or volume, rescan disks, restore disk configuration, revert a disk, update disk information, upgrade a disk, view status of a disk, and view status of a partition or volume.

Disk storage is managed in Windows 2000 Server with a snap-in called Disk Management. This snap-in is included as part of the Computer Management console or can be used to create a custom console. The procedures that follow assume that you have already opened Disk Management by either method.

Use Volume List view or Graphical view when you want to select a volume or partition (drive). Use Disk List view or Graphical view if you want to select a physical disk instead. See Disk Management for more information.

For most administrative tasks involving disks, you should be logged on as an Administrator in order to have sufficient rights.

Hot swapping supported

Install the new disks, then open Disk Management, and select Action Rescan Disks. If the change is not detected by Disk Management, reboot the system.

Hot swapping not supported

Install the new disks, and reboot the system.
