12.2. Understanding Services

You can learn a great deal about the fundamentals of services simply by working with the Services applet in the Control Panel. If you start up the Control Panel and open the Services applet on your machine now, you will find a number of standard services that come with Windows 2000. For example, the Alerter, Clipbook Server, Computer Browser, and Directory Replicator services are all pre-installed when you load Windows 2000 onto your system. You may also find services that have been loaded by your administrator to handle special tasks, or that came with different applications to handle background processing for them.
