12.1. The Possibilities

The Service mechanism in Windows 2000 provides an extremely elegant way to create background tasks for Windows 2000 machines. Windows 2000 itself uses services in quite a few ways. At least fifteen services are available after you install the base system, and add-on modules like the Remote Access Server and the FTP server add new services of their own.

Probably the simplest existing service provided by Wndows 2000 is the Messenger service. When it starts, it creates a mailslot and monitors it.
