8.1. The Possibilities

If you have never programmed with a network operating system before, you may have trouble imagining what is possible, or why network programming is so exciting and versatile. The following list describes five different programs and shows how each makes use of the network.

  1. A multi-player game: Say that you want to create a multi-player game that runs on a network. For example, you might create a flight simulator that lets several people fly separate airplanes and have dogfights with one another. Or you might want to have several players run a dungeon-type adventure game on their machines, and then link the machines through the network so that the different players can "see" and "talk to" each other in the dungeon.
