Experienced photographers can skip this part, but for all those who are new to the game, here are explanations of some common photographic terms.
- Focal lengths are measured in millimeters (mm).
- We often describe how wide the angle of view of a lens is, but seldom refer to how narrow it is, which is actually a more accurate description.
- Lenses with wide angles of view (i.e., wide-angle lenses) are often referred to as short lenses. At the other end of the scale, telephotos are referred to as long lenses.
- Lenses with a wide maximum aperture allow in plenty of light and are consequently described as bright lenses.
