You are probably asking yourself what a chapter on tilt-shift techniques is doing in a book on wide-angle photography. When the words tilt-shift are heard, many photographers immediately think of the fake miniature effect that makes normal everyday scenes look like small-scale models. Furthermore, prices of $2,000 and more for a tilt-shift lens are prohibitive for most amateur photographers, and focal lengths between 17mm and 90mm cover much more than a conventional wide-angle range.

Nevertheless, this chapter demonstrates the charm of tilt-shift effects, why they offer so much more than simply fake miniatures, and why a moderate 24mm tilt-shift lens can provide a realistic alternative to a conventional wide-angle.
