JAN'S INTEGRITY

I struggled through school, and I don't do well on standardized tests, and my counselor made it quite clear that I wasn't college material. Talk about a breach of integrity! Couldn't he have looked more closely at my skills and found a way to encourage me?

Well, I had to prove him wrong. I completed college, became a teacher, and obtained a master's degree. Teaching is my passion. I love kids. The pay isn't lucrative, but I love the work. I also take special kids on field trips during the summer. The parents are usually excited about it, and with that trip I can make the extra money I need. These special kids have a wonderful summertime experience they might otherwise have missed, while the parents also get a much-needed break.

I often think about that counselor. If I had the chance, I would tell him, “Thomas Edison's teacher foolishly thought he was addled. You can do your job with integrity and, at the same time, give kids a sense of value.”
