7.5. Why Some Strategies Are Flawed from the Start

Many proposed strategies—seemingly brilliant though they may be in the eyes of staff advisors—stay glued to the drawing board. Some strategies can't be executed for lots of pretty simple reasons: they're unworkable, unethical, sometimes irresponsible; they may be lacking in power. In my experience, the following are the five most common fatal flaws in strategy:

  1. Not really part of a strategic interest. A strategy may be foolproof, but if its objective doesn't align with the larger corporate strategy, it is beside the point.
