8.6. The Lessons of Pattern and Scenario Awareness

The use of scenarios originated in and until recently was used extensively by the military. The most visible activity in the military's testing of scenario-based readiness is the war game. "War gaming" in business became a more frequent activity in the 1950s and is now a crucial ingredient in making management decisions in most areas of strategic activity. The use of the word scenario is an important distinction designed to differentiate between the attitude accompanying a warlike mentality and an aggressive but peaceful approach to solving business and public problems.
