THE IMPORTANCE OF JUDGMENT

Good judgment is essential for effective leadership. Whether in the executive suite, on the battlefield, or even on the set of a Hollywood movie, an ability to make sound decisions is something that every great leader needs.

In the previous chapter, we explored the importance of vision. Vision gives followers an overall purpose—a mission; it inspires them with a compelling image of the future. That's the end point. Good judgment, by contrast, is what everyone relies on to get there. Judgment enables a leader to steer the group from point A to point B.

The quality of a leader's judgment doesn't fit neatly into a headline the way integrity might. Moments of bad judgment do not necessarily scream out “villain” or “scandal.” ...
