For purposes of understanding how empathy affects leadership, it is useful to break it down into two separate parts. Often these parts work together, but not always.

The first is the ability to appreciate or understand the emotions of other people, wholly apart from what the others know or see. Imagine the same two-way mirror, with a leader sitting on one side of the mirror picking up on the emotions or needs of the person on the other side. We call this understanding one person has of another the “tick.” A person with empathy is attuned to what makes other people tick in a given moment. He has good social awareness.
