Why-I-Am-Here Stories
In a workshop I was conducting, a participant told a story about toying with the idea of lying to a police officer. He started his story with the dreaded phrase, “Sir, do you know how fast you were going?” and then described looking in his rearview mirror at his four-year-old daughter’s eyes. He had heard himself only minutes ago reassuring her mommy, “Relax, I’m only going 10 miles over the speed limit.”
Seeing his daughter, he resisted the urge to lie and say, “No.” His story left me with the impression that he was essentially a truth teller, even when sorely tempted to tell a lie.
