A few years ago, some Amazon.com customers complained directly to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos about marketing emails they received that were promoting some, um, intimate products. It turns out that these customers had at one time visited the pages for some personal lubrication products being sold at Amazon. The Amazon system is constantly using algorithms to make recommendations to customers based on the pages they visit, and it pays particular attention to pages that were visited but did not generate a purchase. While customers generally appreciate these targeted recommendations, that did not seem to be the case when it came to these personal products.
