It was raining late in the afternoon in April 2007 when New Jersey governor Jon Corzine left Atlantic City in a hurry. He had been attending the New Jersey Conference of Mayors and needed to get to back to his residence in Princeton for an important meeting. That morning, radio personality Don Imus had been fired for belittling Rutgers University’s Scarlet Knights women’s basketball team on the air; Corzine had arranged for the team to meet face to face with Imus in the governor’s office. A state trooper drove Corzine’s black Chevy Suburban SUV on the Garden State Parkway, lights flashing as the vehicle wove through early rush hour traffic.
