Deconstructing Low Self-Esteem

In Boost Your Self-Esteem (2003), John Caunt states that self-esteem issues present themselves in different ways, just about all of which are familiar to me. These include (with a few added thoughts of my own):

  • Resenting others’ success
  • Feeling like a failure
  • Focusing on the negative in any situation
  • Allowing even “constructive” criticism to derail us
  • Doing things purely to be liked or for approval
  • Comparing ourselves continually and to our own detriment with others
  • Taking everything too personally
  • Giving in to others’ desires
  • Changing or arresting behaviour for fear of looking foolish
  • Striving for perfection and being angry at not meeting unrealistic expectations
  • Worrying excessively, but avoiding seeking help
  • Feeling out ...
