Making the Organization You Work for Work for You

For most of you, work involves an organization. Although a small percentage of you are truly independent—say, artists or writers—for the vast majority of Generation X, success, no matter how you define it, requires navigating the complexities of an enterprise and balancing your preferences with the often-conflicting priorities of other people. Today almost 95 percent of you work within organizations that are owned or managed by others.1 Most of the rest of you are independent contractors who work regularly with other businesses.
