Changes and Improvements in the Apache Web Server Version 2.2

Introduction

Apache HTTPd 2.2 is the latest version of the Apache Software Foundation’s flagship product; it is also the one that httpd developers most recommend that you use. If you are using an older version of the product—particularly if you are using a 1.3 version—it is highly recommended that you upgrade to the 2.2 series.

In this document, I will attempt to give you some idea of why you should upgrade and an understanding of the new functionality in this release that makes it vastly superior to previous releases.

The new functionality that will be covered in this document includes:

  • Configuration file layout

  • Authentication system redesign

  • Caching and proxying

  • mod_dbd

  • httxt2dbm for RewriteMaps

  • Additional httpd options

  • Module rearrangement and renaming

  • New modules

  • And many other lesser changes
