Spots Before His Eyes
“I remember waking up, early in the morning, to the sound of a little old man walking by our apartment, pushing his cart, calling out, ‘Buy cash clothes. Buy cash clothes.’ He was letting everyone know that he would buy our old clothes if we needed some extra cash, and he would sell us some old clothes for a price we could afford, if we needed them.”
Hmmm. He wouldn’t say, “Buy clothes for cash”?
“No.” Calling out, imitating the voice he heard as a child, Herb repeated, “It was ‘Buy cash clothes.’ I guess that’s why I remember it. And his voice was so distinct,” Herb said. “I can still hear it in my sleep,” like a faint reminder of what was.
