An old Latin proverb can be paraphrased to read “The wise learn from the mistakes of others.” In our collective 100 years of professional experience we’ve made many mistakes. We’ve seen the interpersonal debris in the wake of many mistakes, our own as well as those of others. Over the years—separate and apart from this book—we’ve personally taken to keeping a “This I Know” book of sayings, quotes, and truisms as a gift to our children. We don’t know exactly where the idea came from; it might have been Oprah, or it might have been something we read. Regardless of its origins, it’s meaningful, personal, and, we hope, helpful.
