Passion

By all means, be passionate about building a business, but “enthusiastic,” “energetic,” or “committed” may better describe what you’re up to. If I see founders getting all passionate about background data scrubbing, for example, more power to them, but frankly, it’s hard for me to get all worked up. Passion sometimes gets in the way.

But I do need to see enthusiasm. If you’re not enthusiastic (passionate, energetic, committed, take your pick) about your startup, why should I be enthusiastic? And yes, one of the markers of enthusiasm is the amount of your own money that you put at risk. Don’t ask me to risk my money in your business if you don’t risk any of yours.
