Shibumi: The Art of Perfect Practice

The image in this chapter is a picture of the actress Challen Cates from a photo shoot I did in Los Angeles using a single piece of lighting gear, a 6’ × 3’ diffuser. The reason only a diffuser was used to light this image is that when I arrived at the location, the lighting equipment had not. As a result, all I had was the diffuser that I had loaded, as an afterthought, into my assistant’s car. Once on location, I could either react to the situation and call it a day, or I could be proactive and adapt and improvise; i.e., go ahead with the shoot believing that “impossible” is just an opinion and that by adapting and improvising I would be able to achieve my original purpose.
